Please join me Friday, February 5th for Art Murmur at American Steel Studios. I will be showing a variety of work I've completed in the last 18 months including collage, box sculptures, unidentified metal objects (UMOs), poetry books, other hand-crafted items and even a chess set.

I enjoy podcasts, especially while I am working in my studio. Recently, I’ve been listening to Michael Ian Black’s How To Be Amazing. At the end of each interview Black asks his guests to describe the best and worst advice they ever received.

I am excited that two of my box sculptures have been selected for the 2015 Fall Annual Juried Exhibit at the Falkirk Galleries in San Rafael, CA.

While creating my most recent body of work, CONTAIN, I made a conscious decision to title each sculpture in a way that was minimally informative. This stemmed from my desire to give the viewer a chance to develop their own idea or story behind each piece.

Lately, I have been reflecting on how my art has evolved over time and the common themes that have arisen. Throughout, the most consistent element of my artmaking has been my process. Rather than conceiving an idea and then figuring out how to create it, I allow the medium I'm working with to guide me to the end result without any preconceived notion of what the final outcome may be.

For the past five months or so I have been making metal box sculptures using scrap steel and random objects that I have been collecting for many years. The creation process is a lot of fun.

On October 3rd, at Art Murmur at American Steel Studios, I unveiled The Postcard Project. It was an idea I hatched the week prior after having unexpectedly come into possession of 100 postcards with images by graphic artist James Jean.

On the evening of June 5, 2014 I missed a step coming down the stairs at home and broke my foot. It was the fifth metatarsal, to be exact, and my first broken bone ever. The doctor told me to expect it to take at least 10 to 12 weeks for my foot to heal.

I'm in the beginning stages of a new body of work partly inspired by the art of Joseph Cornell. Recently I've been experimenting making collages, something I've never done before. It's been fun and I'm excited to see where these new explorations lead me.

My senior show at California College of the Arts (then known as California College of Arts and Crafts) in the spring of 2003 was called "Sometimes I Wish I Was Famous". The title was inspired by a Swedish tribute album to Depeche Mode of the same name that was released in 1991.

Whenever I embark on a new art project, I begin with the material - usually a commonplace object, frequently found in multiples, almost always destined to be discarded. From there I explore.

Spending time in my studio stirs up a lot of emotions in me. Most often I feel a simple sense of joy. But there are times when I am also afraid and insecure or curious and surprised.

Recently I'd been wanting to do some welding so I made this table out of scrap metal that's been collecting dust in my studio. It has a removable shelf in the front and my little Weber grill fits on it perfectly..

I was inspired to make this planter box after seeing bike wheels used as trellises for vegetables in a community garden in San Diego. I just planted pea starts. I hope they like their new home.

I am really excited about a new body of work that I've just begun. I've been playing with cardboard inserts that come in shipper boxes. I don't have an idea of the form that I will create, I just start putting the cardboard pieces together and see what they become.

I've finally had a chance to post images of some of the cairns I built in Colorado this year. As always, my retreat to Marble was blissful and full of creativity.
