Statement

I am fascinated by the geometry in every aspect of life because it contains order in our seemingly random and chaotic world. A mathematical system with absolute rules creates balance and, within that, I find beauty. When I see the Fibonacci sequence reflected in the growth pattern of plants, I am reminded of a Mandala, traditionally thought to be a spiritual symbol of the universe. It grows in layers with each connecting to the whole spirally outward infinitely but existing only within itself. Through my art, I strive to make visible these types of complex and unnoticed details appearing all around us. I am inspired by the intricate forms that can be found in nature and frequently incorporate them into my work whether abstract or literal. I am influenced by the practice of reuse and less inclined to buy new art supplies. As a result, my material choices are typically based on what I have on hand, which is a collection of items that I have found or have been given to me. I gravitate towards objects that are frequently thrown away because they are so readily available.

Bio

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Kitty Gordon’s childhood dream was to one day manage an art supply store. Carrying forward her interest in both business and art, she earned her fine arts degree in sculpture from California College of the Arts in 2003, nearly ten years after having received a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Since then, she has been continually exploring new ways in which to express herself creatively. Her work has been displayed in gallery exhibitions, outdoor sculpture walks and as part of temporary site-specific installations throughout the United States and Canada. Kitty conducts her artistic experiments in her studio in West Oakland, California.
